5.4-magnitude earthquake rattles rural southeastern New Mexico, West Texas

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook a rural space of West Texas and southeastern New Mexico Saturday evening.

The U.S. Geological Survey experiences that the earthquake occurred at 7:47 p.m. native time, with an epicenter in West Texas, about 35 miles south of Whites Metropolis, New Mexico. It was initially measured at a magnitude of 5.3 earlier than being upgraded to five.4. 

Whites Metropolis is a small resort city situated close to Carlsbad Caverns Nationwide Park, simply north of the Texas border and about 95 miles south of Roswell, New Mexico.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of three.9 miles. Jennifer Armendariz, an emergency supervisor for Eddy County, New Mexico, which incorporates Whites Metropolis, instructed CBS Information in an e mail that “though” the earthquake “was felt by many residents,” there have been “no calls into both dispatch or my workplace for harm at the moment.”

As of 9:45 p.m., the USGS’ Felt Report characteristic had obtained almost 1,500 public responses. The massive quake was adopted within the area by two smaller 2.9-magnitude aftershocks. 

On the morning of April 14, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit San Diego County and was extensively felt throughout Southern California and northern Mexico. Seismologists mentioned the earthquake was probably related to a department of the San Andreas Fault system.
