South African golfer Ernie Els is expected to visit the White House today with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s delegation, as the leader tries to reset relations between his country and the US, according to three US officials familiar with the plans.
In addition to Els, the South African presidency also lists professional golfer Retief Goosen as part of the official delegation.
Why this matters: Bringing some of the most successful golfers in the world into the meeting with President Donald Trump, who is an avid golfer himself, might set a positive tone. But some US officials still predict that the meeting could turn into a “nightmare” scenario. They expect Trump to press Ramaphosa on the country’s treatment of White farmers in South Africa.
“It is certainly possible that we see fireworks like we saw in the Zelensky Oval Office meeting,” said a US official, referring to the tense meeting in which President Donald Trump berated his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in February.
The meeting is billed as a trade engagement, but US officials said that South Africa’s goal is the overall reset of the relationship.
Musk will also be there: South Africa-born Elon Musk is expected to attend the White House meeting, two US officials said.
Ahead of Wednesday’s meeting, South African officials were also expected to present a workaround plan that would allow Musk’s Starlink internet service to operate within their country, according to a person familiar with the matter. Musk has protested Black ownership laws that he said prevented the service from operating in his home country. The step was viewed as a goodwill gesture directed toward a top supporter of Trump’s as South Africa works to revamp the relationship.
Trump and Musk have alleged that White farmers in the country are being discriminated against under land reform policies that South Africa’s government says are necessary to remedy the legacy of apartheid. US officials do not expect that subject to be left out of the meeting.
This post has been updated with news that Goosen is also expected to attend.
