A number of washouts in the Espanola area have shut down roads ‘until repairs are completed’

12:31 p.m. update:

“Highway 6 has been partially reopened and both lanes of traffic are being allowed through periodically as road crews continue to repair the road. Please continue to be patient, and proceed with caution through the area as road crews continue the repairs on the road.”

Original report:

Manitoulin OPP says a washout that has closed Highway 6 in both directions between Birch Lane and Hopkins Hill Road near Espanola is one of a number that have disrupted transportation in the region.

Ontario 511 reports the highway has been closed since shortly after midnight. No detour is available.

The full list of road closures is included in the information provided by OPP via social media:

#ManitoulinOPP is advising of the following road closures in our area due to washouts:

  • #Hwy6 is fully closed between Birch Lane and Hopkins Hill Road near #Espanola due to a washout. Road crews are on scene and currently assessing the damage.
  • Fox Lake Road is closed as a result of a culvert washout.
  • #OldWebbwoodRoad in #SablesSpanishRiversTownship is fully closed near civic # 241 due to a washout.
  • #MintoRoad is fully closed between Davis Road and Old Nairn Road in #NairnCentre due to a washout. Road crews will be attending the location to assess the damage.

These road closures will remain in effect until further notice. At this time, no detour routes are available, and the affected areas will stay closed until repairs are completed and the roads are confirmed to be safe for travel.

The Manitoulin OPP is urging the public to avoid these locations and to respect all road closure signs. For your safety, do not attempt to bypass barricades or detour around signage, as the road conditions are unstable and pose a serious risk to drivers.

The OPP will provide updates as more information becomes available. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as crews work diligently to restore safe travel routes.

Visit the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website at ontario.ca/511, or call 511 for updates on road closures.
