England will get their shot at back-to-back European titles after clawing their way to the Euro 2025 final in Switzerland – and they will face familiar opponents on Sunday.
England will take on Spain in a sensational rematch of the 2023 World Cup final after Aitana Bonmati’s goal in extra time sent the world champions through to their first European final with a 1-0 victory over Germany in Zurich.
Spain are looking to follow their World Cup triumph two years ago, where they beat England 1-0 in Sydney, with a first ever Euros title while the Lionesses will be out for revenge as they defend their title.

Midfielder Ella Toone joked England “nearly killed” Sarina Wiegman en route to the Euro 2025 final.
“I think we’ve nearly killed her twice this tournament,” said Toone. “She’s said we’ve definitely aged her, but five consecutive tournaments for Sarina being in the final and that’s just unbelievable.
“We know we’re in good hands, we know she’s a manager who can take teams right to the final, and she’s done a few good speeches to be fair, this camp, I’ll give it to her.”

As England again wonder how Keira Walsh can evade Spain’s intense press in order to decide a major trophy, some in the Football Association are still marvelling at the shift. This is as high a level as you can get, and is now a frequent challenge, when they grew up just hoping to qualify for tournaments.
“I have trouble explaining to my kids sometimes that this isn’t normal,” FA chief executive Mark Bullingham laughs. “When you look at 1967 and through 50 years to 2020, we made one final.”

he last few hours before a major final always have that strangely charged serenity. If that sounds like a contradiction, it only fits with the mood. At England’s Dolder Grand base, there’s also one question left hanging in the rarefied air. Will Sarina Wiegman come up with something different for the Euro 2025 final – the team’s third in a row, and her fifth?

Leah Williamson said England are “connected” to the nation back home and understand what it would mean to win just a second trophy since 1966 with victory on Sunday.
“The opportunity tomorrow and what’s on offer is the best thing in football,” Williamson said. “We wanted to be here until the end and have a chance to win the trophy.
“We don’t carry the weight of it but we’re aware of it because it means the same to us. We recognise the opportunity and we’ll do everything we can to do it.”

Sarina Wiegman expects to have all 23 players available for selection, should they come through their final recovery, including James.
