Should Tigers trade Tarik Skubal in 2025-26 offseason? Ex-GM breaks it down
Former MLB general manager Jim Duquette joins “Days of Roar” podcast to analyze if Detroit Tigers should consider trading ace Tarik Skubal this offseason.
After beginning July as the best team in baseball, the Detroit Tigers have now slipped to the eighth-best record after a disastrous losing streak in the middle of the month.
With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Tigers are looking for players who can help them return to early-season form and eventually help them win in October.
Don’t expect the Tigers to buy big, though. Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris has indicated that the team is not selling the farm at the deadline. Harris is reportedly open to big trades if they made sense for the team, but is hesitant to trade prospects, saying, “My job is to position this organization to win as much as we can, and so I don’t think trading some players that have a chance to be impact big leaguers in Detroit is the smartest thing to do.”
Here are the latest Detroit Tigers MLB rumors and updates ahead of the trade deadline, which is Thursday, July 31, at 6 p.m. E.T.
The Tigers might be looking for more help after discovering that right-handed starter Reese Olson is out for the season with a shoulder strain.
That announcement was made shortly after the Tigers traded for Twins starter Chris Paddock and minor-league reliever Randy Dobnak, likely explaining the move with Minnesota.
Besides Olson, the Tigers have eight pitchers on the 60-day or 15-day injured list: Alex Cobb (60 day), Jason Foley (60 day), Sawyer Gipson-Long (15 day), Sean Guenther (60 day), Jackson Jobe (60 day), Alex Lange (60 day), Ty Madden (60 day) and Jose Urquidy (60 day).
To add insult to injured list, the Tigers also announced outfielder Parker Meadows suffered a quad strain during the team’s 10-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. It was only their second victory in 14 games.
The Tigers have made a trade, and it’s with a division rival.
The Tigers acquired right-handers Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak from the Minnesota Twins on Monday, July 28, sending away 19-year-old catcher Enrique Jimenez to get the deal done. He ranks as the Tigers’ No. 14 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
Paddack has a 4.95 ERA with 27 walks and 83 strikeouts across 111 innings in 21 starts in the 2025 season. He has a 4.49 ERA in his seven-year MLB career, spanning 106 games (103 starts).
Dobnak, 30, has spent all but one game in 2025 with Triple-A St. Paul, registering a 7.12 ERA with 35 walks and 42 strikeouts over 60⅔ innings in 17 games (10 starts).

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote on “X” that the Tigers would “love to finalize a deal” while Suárez and the Diamondbacks are in town. The Tigers take on the Diamondbacks Monday through Wednesday at Comerica. Detroit is among the contenders for Suárez, who is the most coveted player on the market. Suárez will be a free agent at the end of this season.
The Tigers are among the teams contending for Diamondbacks 3B Eugenio Suárez. Suárez is one of the most coveted players on the market as a veteran 3B who is slashing .247/.319/.579 and leads the MLB in RBI with 87. He’s also hit 36 home runs and walked 29 times with a .898 OPS.
Suárez and the Diamondbacks are in town Monday through Wednesday to play the Tigers. Free Press Tigers beat writer Evan Petzold laid out what it might take for Suárez to not leave Detroit when the series ends.
Petzold said the Tigers do not want to part with one of the top-five prospects in their farm system, while that’s exactly what the Diamondbacks are looking for.
Perhaps a compromise could be in order, with the Diamondbacks sending more win-now help to the Tigers in favor for a higher-ranked prospect, Petzold pitched.
