The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for rain in Mumbai, while schools were also declared closed in the city amid heavy rain which resulted to severe waterlogging at several areas.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday in all schools now amid heavy rain. All schools of the afternoon shift were to remain closed, according to BMC PRO.

The red alert, the highest level in the weather panel’s four-tier warning system, was in place on Monday for Borivali, Thane, Kalyan, Mulund, Powai, Santa Cruz, Chembur, Worli, Navi Mumbai, and Colaba, as waterlogging continued to dot parts of the city, triggering traffic congestions.

Several other parts of Maharashtra have also been put under red, yellow and orange alerts for the day.

Heavy to very heavy showers, exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied with overcast skies, thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected to brace the financial capital today, after the rain intensity decreased on Sunday morning, with light rain, occasional heavy spells and no major waterlogging reported.

Heavy rainfall had hit Mumbai on Friday, after which an orange alert was issued by IMD. A day after the warning, i.e between 1 am and 4 am on August 16, 2025, Mumbai witnessed intense rain, particularly across the western and eastern suburbs.

Mumbai was earlier put on a red alert by IMD on Saturday, with some parts recording more than 200 mm rainfall. The city was battered with overnight rains, inundating low-lying areas and affecting the movement of local trains.

Two persons were killed and as many others sustained injuries in a landslide amid rains in the Vikhroli Parksite area in the eastern suburbs on Saturday. The local train services had also been severely affected due to waterlogging on tracks at several locations on the Central and Western Railway lines.

The IMD had earlier issued an ‘orange’ alert on Sunday, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with winds gusting up to 40-50 kmph per hour, and some were even predicted to 60 kmph, at a few places in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts.

Parts of Maharashtra that are alerted for rainfall today

Alongside Mumbai, the IMD has also issued a red alert for Ratnagiri, Alibag, Raigad Reserve, Shrivardhan, Harnai and Dapoli.

A yellow alert is issued today for Nashik, Khandala, Bhimshankar Reserve, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Kolhapur, Satara, Malegaon, Dhule, Igatpuri, Nandurbar, Karad, Baramati, Ahmednagar, Amaravati, Akola, Buldhana, Shrirampur, Shirdi, Jeur, Pandharpur, Solapur, Beed, and Udgir.

Chalisgaon, Jalgaon, Ajanta, Aurangabad, Jalana, Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Dahanu, Vikramgad, Shrivardhan, Harnai, Dapoli, Vijaydurg, Devgad, Mitbhav Beach, Sindhudurg, Malvan, Shriramwadi, Vengurla and Sawantwadi have been put on an orange alert for today.

Maharashtra’s weather in the upcoming days

Mumbai will be experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall till August 20. The city will be bracing heavy to very heavy showers till August 23, according to IMD’s citywise forecast. Today, Mumbai’s maximum temperature will hover around 26.5°C and minimum around 24°C.

A red alert has been issued by IMD for regions across the Madhya Maharashtra subdivision, comprising Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nadurbar, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Kolhapur, and Nashik. Extremely heavy rain accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning, and strong squalls are predicted to last till August 19, Tuesday.

Marathwada subdivision comprising Beed, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, Hingoli, Jhalna, Latur, Nanded, and Parbhani, has been put on an orange alert today and yellow alert tomorrow, with very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning.

Gujarat region and Saurashtra and Kutch have been put on an orange alert for today and red alerts till August 20. Heavy rains, thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds are forecasted over these subdivisions.

Konkan and Goa, and Vidarbha have also been put on red alerts for today and tomorrow, with light showers and strong winds continuing in the subdivisions till August 24.

Advisories for those travelling to and from Mumbai

After the city continues to drench in heavy showers for nearly the fourth consecutive day, airlines today issued travel advisories for those landing in Mumbai or heading to the airport.

IndiGo and Akasa Air, in separate advisories, urged passengers to plan their travel and check flight status in advance, amid heavy rain, waterlogging and traffic disruptions in Mumbai.

Citing the severe waterlogging in the city, both airlines posted on their official X handle advising travellers to check flight status and plan in advance.
