New York Giants fall to Dallas Cowboys, 40-37, in overtime thriller

FeaturedYesterday4 Views

The New York Giants (0-1) traveled to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to take on the Dallas Cowboys (0-1) in a Week 2 NFC East clash.

In a game that was expected to be a blowout, the Giants and Cowboys put on a dazzling display, exchanging blows like heavyweight boxers until the final minutes of overtime. If not for the penalties (26 combined), the game would have been considered an instant classic.

Alas, the Giants could not come up with the knockout blow and fell to the Cowboys for the 16th time in their last 17 meetings.

Here is how everything played out.

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 OT Final
Giants 6 7 3 21 0 37
Cowboys 0 10 7 20 3 40

The Giants and Cowboys battled back-and-forth in overtime, but a Russell Wilson interception on a prayer throw gave Dak Prescott the ball back, and he did what he always does: Beat the Giants.

A chip-shot walk-off field goal is how this story ends.

Cowboys 40, Giants 37

The Giants won the toss (tails) in overtime and opted to play defense first.

Despite the Giants’ heroics, the Cowboys connected on a 64-yard field goal as time expired, sending the game to overtime.

Let the play speak for itself.

With under 1:00 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Giants’ defense broke, surrendering a six-yard touchdown pass to George Pickens to cap off an 11-play, 71-yard drive. And once again, the drive was helped by a penalty (defensive pass interference).

Cowboys 34, Giants 30.

Following a Malik Nabers drop on third down, the Giants opted to go for it on fourth-and-4. Rather than making a play at the line, quarterback Russell Wilson uncorked a moonball to Wan’Dale Robinson for a beautiful 32-yard touchdown to return the lead to Big Blue.

Giants 30, Cowboys 27

Aided by yet another penalty — a roughing the passer — the Cowboys regained the lead by capping off a 10-yard, 85-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run by Giants nemesis, Miles Sanders.

Cowboys 27, Giants 23

The Giants put rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart into the game for his NFL debut and with Dallas expecting a pass, Cam Skattebo took a handoff for 24 yards. He took the following handoff for a one-yard touchdown run, his first in the NFL.

Giants 23, Cowboys 20

The Cowboys capped off an 11-play, 56-yard drive with a 44-yard field goal. The drive was aided by — you guessed it — a long defensive pass interference penalty.

Cowboys 20, Giants 16

After a 52-yard pass to Darius Slayton put the Giants in position in the red zone, they again hit a wall. Cam Skattebo picked up a five-yard gain, and then consecutive incomplete passes resulted in a 33-yard Graham Gano field goal. The Giants are 0-for-4 in the red zone in Week 2.

Cowboys 17, Giants 16

The Giants continue to shoot themselves in the foot, getting called for two huge penalties (roughing the passer, defensive pass interference), before allowing Javonte Williams to break off a 30-yard touchdown run.

Just like that, the lead is gone.

Cowboys 17, Giants 13

Linebacker Darius Muasau, who is playing in place of Micah McFadden (IR), suffered an injury midway through the third quarter and was escorted off the field. The Giants are incredibly thin at inside linebacker.

The Giants listed Muasau as questionable to return and then later ruled him out (concussion).

Following Dru Phillips’ interception, the Giants again drove into the red zone and came up empty-handed. Two Cam Skattebo runs yielded one yard, a Russell Wilson-designed run gained seven yards, and a fourth-down pass to Skattebo was dropped. Turnover on downs.

After a week of back-and-forth trash talk, with CeeDee Lamb vowing revenge on Dru Phillips, who he blamed for injuring him in 2024, the two clashed on Sunday. Phillips was called for unnecessary roughness on Lamb earlier in the game, but rebounded with an interception on a pass intended for Lamb early in the third quarter.

Credit Abdul Carter with the pressure.

Fittingly, the first half ended with a false start penalty on the Cowboys. In total, there have been a combined 13 penalties accepted for 110 yards in the game. At least seven-plus more were declined.

It has been a flag-fest in Arlington on Sunday, and that continued late in the second quarter as a Cowboys offensive drive was littered with laundry on both teams. The Giants committed multiple infractions, many of which were declined, including on a 10-yard touchdown pass by Dak Prescott.

In total, the Giants have nine accepted penalties for 80 yards. They also committed three penalties on one play, but it was offset by a CeeDee Lamb taunting penalty.

Giants 13, Cowboys 10

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, facing scrutiny and calls for his job, is lighting things up against the Cowboys. That continued with a five-play, 70-yard drive littered with big plays down the field. A 25-yard pass to Wan’Dale Robinson led to a 29-yard touchdown pass to Malik Nabers, who made an incredible play on the ball.

Giants 13, Cowboys 3

After two poor offensive drives, the Cowboys finally got on the board with an eight-yard, 42-yard drive with a 51-yard field goal. A Kayvon Thibodeaux sack on third down ended the drive.

Giants 6, Cowboys 3

After an impressive drive with several big plays to wide receiver Malik Nabers, the Giants stalled in the red zone once again — a theme of their Week 1 loss. Instead, they were forced to settle for a 33-yard Graham Gano field goal.

Giants 6, Cowboys 0

After committing four penalties on the opening offensive series, the first player to accomplish that feat this century, left tackle James Hudson was benched in favor of rookie Marcus Mbow.

The Giants’ defense held the Cowboys’ offense to a three-and-out on their opening series. However, the drive nearly continued with a Dak Prescott QB sneak on fourth-and-1 that would have converted had they gotten the snap off on time. Instead, they were called for delay of game and punted.

On the opening offensive series, left tackle James Hudson was called for four penalties (-40 yards) and allowed a sack (-5 yards), single-handedly costing the Giants a touchdown. They ultimately settled for a 38-yard Graham Gano field goal.

Giants 3, Cowboys 0

The Giants opened the game with a 67-yard kickoff return by Gunner Olszewski that was wiped away by a holding penalty. Tyrone Tracy Jr. then had a 24-yard run that was similarly wiped away by a holding penalty.

A 10-yard Cam Skattebo run was also called back on a Jamed Hudson penalty.

The Cowboys won the coin toss and opted to defer. The Giants will receive the ball to start the game, and Dallas will receive the second-half kickoff.

Former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. would always put on a show during pregame warmups, and now Malik Nabers has taken the mantle.
