Five people are dead, including a police officer, after a 27-year-old man opened fire inside a high-rise midtown Manhattan building in New York City on July 28, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
The mayor confirmed the death toll in a news conference on Monday night, sharing that the shooter, one police officer and three civilians died. One person shot is in critical condition. Law enforcement previously said six people had died.
The gunman’s specific motive for the shooting remains under investigation, but believe he acted alone. Law enforcement is looking at a number of different theories given the individual’s prior interests.
The gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, four senior New York City officials told NBC News.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during the Monday night press conference that the man had a M4 rifle when we got out of his car. He then entered the building’s lobby and “immediately opened fire.”
In photos shared by the NYPD, a man in sunglasses was seen wearing a navy jacket, black pants and light-blue button-up shirt, walking with what appeared to be a long gun.
Before 7 p.m., the New York Police Department warned people to avoid the area of East 52 Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue “due to police activity.”
“Expect emergency vehicles & delays in the surrounding area,” the NYPD’s X account statement.
By 8 p.m., Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch confirmed on X that “the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.”
FBI agents also responded to the incident, deputy director Don Bongino shared on X.
“FBI New York Field Office management personnel and agents are responding to provide support at the active crime scene in Manhattan.”
Mayer Eric Adams had warned about the active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown.
“Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street,” his tweet read.
