Boja Raja Nagar subway opens today

Chennai: Residents of Old Washermanpet may breathe easy as the Boja Raja Nagar subway will be inaugurated today by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. This ends decades of public enduring long wait at a busy railway crossing. Built at 13.41crore, the project will ease travel for those in Boja Raja Nagar, Mint Modern City, and Srinivasa Nagar, who live sandwiched between three railway tracks. The subway, located near Kannan street close to Mint Bridge, was sanctioned by the Southern Railway, and work began after the letter of acceptance was issued on July 1, 2022. The project was scheduled for completion in July 2024, but delays pushed the inauguration to this month.Advocate Mohamed Aadhif, a resident of Mint Modern City, said that even after the gates were opened, it took nearly an hour for vehicles to pass. “This is because vehicles were diverted to a narrow lane, forcing both heavy and light motor vehicles to share the same route,” he said.He said a fellow advocate’s brother died last year after an ambulance was struck at the closed crossing. Subsequently, he filed a PIL before Madras HC. Following this, HC summoned the GCC commissioner and told him to expedite the subway work.“Around 6,000 people live in the immediate vicinity of the level crossing, which sees 41 trains pass daily. Railway gates often remain closed for 10 to 40 minutes at a time, and sometimes longer for goods trains,” he said.
