Uttarakhand Police on Sunday arrested 34 individuals posing as saints and sages in Dehradun under ‘Operation Kalanemi,’ a crackdown on fraudulent religious figures.
Senior superintendent of police Ajay Singh stated those arrested were found engaging in deceptive practices, with 23 being from other states.
Swami Yatindranand Giri of the Juna Akhara strongly endorsed Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s initiative, calling it a “courageous move” to protect Sanatan Dharma from impostors and criminal elements.
He alleged some individuals in saffron robes consume meat and alcohol, engage in fraud, and promote “immoral behaviour” to tarnish Hindutva. Swami Giri, welcoming the move on behalf of saints nationwide, expressed gratitude to CM Dhami for targeting societal “cancer” and restoring Sanatan Dharma’s purity.
Operation Kalanemi commenced on July 10, following Dhami’s directive to crack down on impersonators exploiting religious sentiments.
