Yesterday, we were lucky enough to get an advance sighting of Wicked: For Good‘s first trailer, showcasing the evolution of Elphaba and Glinda’s journeys to becoming the Wicked and Good Witches respectively.

We’ll say from the off – the Wicked sequel seems more morally ambiguous and conflicted than the last one, leaping off the end of the first part and grappling with the consequences of Glinda and Elphaba’s actions after the truth of the Wizard’s intentions is revealed.

If part one was a magical high school comedy, then part two, set five years later, is a political thriller tinged with mysticism and sorcery. Both films were captured in the UK at the same time, meaning the cast were having to wear “part one” and “part two” hats interchangeably.

When will it be released?

Wicked: For Good is set to sail into UK cinemas on 21 November 2025, almost exactly a year after part one. We’re already in agony waiting so long. Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and more will all return, while famous numbers from act two include “For Good”, “As Long As You’re Mine” and “No Good Deed”. You can hear bits of the first and the last in the trailer. But there’s more…

New numbers

Let us be glad – the Wicked writing team have confirmed that there are two new numbers being composed for part two that don’t feature in the stage show. One of these is said to be a new solo number for Grande’s Glinda. There may, during the early part of the trailer, be a few bars of that tune heard. According to a recent interview with Chu, these new numbers were played to Grande and Erivo when they first signed on for the flicks.

New scenes

The trailer definitely suggests a wealth of new material has been added to boost the Wicked: For Good film texture and storytelling. A glimpse of Dorothy hopping onto the Yellow Brick Road and meeting the Wizard was featured (sorry Matilda fans, it looks as though a certain film star won’t be taking on the role as rumours had claimed), all of which goes well beyond what was included in the stage show. That will likely mean oodles of new dialogue and texture added to all our favourite characters.

We also get a montage of Elphaba’s rebellion (including springing animals from cages across Oz), as well as a first look at her lair where she tears apart propaganda about her wickedness. There also seems to be a much more lavish spectacle for Glinda’s wedding – so we’re intrigued to see how that plays out.

Returning characters

Given the flashforward Elphaba had in part one, it’s likely we’ll meet back up with the tragic Dr Dillamond in part two. What’s more interesting is who we might not see – will Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James’ Shiz students make a comeback? Could Keala Settle’s Miss Coddle reappear, given Settle’s magnificent singing voice? We can confirm there will definitely be a return to Shiz following a smattering of reshoots (all of which are fairly standard for any major motion picture these days), so we may even get some familiar family members back for part two…

Paul Tazewell’s incredible costumes have evolved

Paul Tazewell made history winning an Oscar for his costumes earlier this year, and part two seems to suggest he could repeat the trick for part two. Glinda’s gorgeous wedding dress, Elphaba’s evolved overalls, Fiyero’s gold-crested palace guard uniform – we’re expecting a rich visual feast come November.

Cameos galore!

As we’ve detailed copiously, part one had a whole raft of cameos and special appearances from West End stars and Wicked legends. It seems that part two will continue the trend! A few names we’d heard attached to the film didn’t appear in part one, so we’re guessing we’ll see them somewhere in the upcoming movie.

Questions need answers…

First of all – who was the rider at the stat of part one? Anyone who has seen the first film will remember a scene where a hooded figure gallops towards the Emerald City at the beginning of the piece, as Dorothy journeys along the Yellow Brick Road with the deceased witch’s broom. They also make a quick reappearance in the trailer for part two… But who were they? We have some theories based on the stage show, but we’re hoping we might be surprised!

Secondly – what might change? Will the ending be rewritten? Will certain characters have different fates? We’re so fascinated. Bring on November 2025!
