Football recruiting rewind, Week 2

USAFeatured2 weeks ago6 Views

College football is officially back, and while we’re still months away from the annual game between Michigan and Ohio State, the rivalry never dies.

Ohio State kicked off the Saturday slate with a massive matchup against top-ranked Texas, with several commitments and possible future pledges in attendance.

One of those potential future commitments is 2027 top-25 athlete Myson Johnson-Cook. Already holding an offer ahead of his visit to Columbus, Johnson-Cook received a surprise phone call while watching the Buckeyes’ 14-7 win over Texas.

That surprise call came from Michigan running backs coach and former Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford, who extended an offer to Johnson-Cook while watching the Wolverines’ biggest rival.

The rivalry never dies between those programs, and stories like this were just the tip of what was a memorable second week of the high school football season and first week of college football.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into that in the latest edition of Friday Night Notes, our rewind on the best of the best in high school football from the past week.

Georgia 5-star quarterback pledge Jared Curtis shines in massive win

Anyone doubting future George Bulldog Jared Curtis quickly shut themselves up following Curtis’ gutsy win Friday night as he led Nashville Christian to a 42-41 overtime win over state powerhouse Ensworth (Tenn.).

Throwing the ball, Curtis was 20-for-30 for 189 yards and three touchdowns. With four seconds remaining, Curtis also threw the touchdown pass that would send the game to an extra period.Where he made his biggest impact was on the ground.

Carrying the ball 16 times, Curtis found the end zone twice for 131 more yards and would go on to score the game-winning two-point conversion in the overtime period thanks to a push from TCU running back commitment T.J. Ward.

Ohio State makes an impression in front of several top prospects

Not only was today a massive win on the field for the Buckeyes as the reigning national champions beat Texas, but the result could have enormous implications for the Buckeyes’ next few recruiting classes.

Several top 2026 commitments were in attendance today, along with several other top 2026, 2027, and 2028 prospects the Buckeyes hope to land.

Some notable uncommitted visitors include 2025 five-star receiver Easton Royal, 2027 four-star Oregon receiver commitment Kesean Bowman, 2027 five-star running back Kemon Spell and a plethora of 2028 quarterback prospects like Champ Monds and Donald Tabron II.

Top-2028 defensive back Jermaine Cobbins impresses with solo stop

Springfield (Tenn.) sophomore defensive back has developed into a bit of a human highlight reel through his two seasons of high school football.

Cobbins started off his sophomore season catching a Hail Mary at the end of the first half of the Yellow Jackets’ Week 1 win. This week Cobbins made his highlight reel play on the opposite side of the play.

Playing Clarksville in the 102nd meeting between the schools, Clarksville broke off a long run in the first quarter. Cobbins chased down the ball carrier and played the game like he was in rookie mode, stripping it away with ease, giving his team back the ball and preventing a game-tying drive in the process.

Duece Jones-Drew makes a name for himself with late game-winner

The son of former Jacksonville Jaguars great Maurice Jones-Drew, Duece has quickly emerged as a name to know in the 2027 class, and on Friday, he added an important chapter to his legacy.

In a low-scoring affair between a pair of USA TODAY Super 25 teams, Duece’s touchdown with 2:38 remaining would be the touchdown that gave De La Salle a 10-6 win over Lakeland.

Duece was the Spartans’ offense on the night. He finished the evening with 99 of their 202 total yards of offense, while the defense did enough on one last Lakeland drive to secure the win.
