ITR Filing deadline for FY2024-25 today
The last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) is today, i.e. September 15. Even though many CAs and experts had appealed for an extension, pointing out technical glitches on the e-filing portal, delays in the release of Excel utilities, and other filing-related issues, various official sources have already confirmed that there is no extension in the Income Tax filing deadline. Hence, taxpayers should file their ITRs today positively before 12 midnight to avoid any penalties.

ITR Filing- A step-by-step guide
Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal using your PAN and password.
Select ‘Assessment Year 2025-26’ if filing for FY 2024-25, and click Online → Continue.
Choose your applicable filing category — Individual, HUF, or Others — and proceed.
Select the correct ITR form based on your income sources. (ITR 1–4 apply to individuals and HUFs).
State your Reason for Filing ITR.
Enter the required details, validate, confirm, and submit your return.
E-verify the ITR within 30 days of filing. If not verified, your return will be treated as invalid.

ITR Filing Portal
File your ITR through the official portal: https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/

Why Is ITR e-Verification Important?
Verification is mandatory to complete the return filing process. If your ITR is not verified within the given time, it becomes invalid.

Penalty for Late ITR Filing
If you miss the due date, you can still submit a belated return until December 31, 2025. A penalty of Rs 5,000 will apply for most taxpayers. However, if your taxable income is below Rs 5 lakh, the penalty is capped at Rs 1,000.

How to Track Your Income Tax Refund Status
Follow these steps to check your refund status online:

Go to www.incometax.gov.in and log in using your PAN and password. Ensure your PAN is linked to Aadhaar; otherwise, use the “Link Now” option.
From the top menu, select Services → Know Your Refund Status.
Under the e-File tab, click Income Tax Returns, then select View Filed Returns.
The status of your refund for the selected assessment year will be displayed.
