Latest news: Marriott adds 3 in Calgary; Hyatt debuts Thompson in APAC; pre-COVID NYC hotel sells

Marriott
adds 3 in Calgary.
Marriott
International and Truman are opening three hotels in Calgary, including W
Calgary, JW Marriott Calgary, and an Autograph Collection Hotel on Stampede
Park. The developments are expected to open in 2028, 2029, and 2030 respectively, and will be led
by Calgary-based, joint-venture partners Truman and Louson. The hotels are planned
to be two of Western Canada’s tallest residential towers.

Senate bill includes Brand USA cuts. The U.S. Senate narrowly passed President Trump’s budget bill that reduces Brand USA’s federal funding from $100 million to $20 million for the 2026 fiscal year. The original legislation introduced by the White House, called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, included full funding for Brand USA. But in June, as part of the budget reconciliation bill process, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation proposed cutting the organization’s budget from $100 million to $20 million.

Hyatt
debuting Thompson in APAC.
Hyatt Hotels Corp. is expanding its luxury and lifestyle brand
portfolios across Asia Pacific, with a pipeline of close to 90 properties
expected to open over the next five years. This growth includes the debut of
the Thompson Hotels brand in the region alongside new entries and expansion for
Andaz, The Standard and Park Hyatt brands in Thailand, Malaysia and Australia
in 2025 and 2026. Since 2017, Hyatt has doubled the number of luxury rooms,
tripled its resort rooms, and grown lifestyle rooms five-fold globally. Through
Q1 2025, 64% of Hyatt’s Asia Pacific hotels and resorts are in the luxury and
upper-upscale segments. The Thompson Shanghai Expo is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2025. 

Hawkins
Way acquires in NYC.
 Beverly
Hills, California-based Hawkins Way Capital has acquired the former 492-key
Holiday Inn by IHG in Manhattan’s Financial District in New York City. Hawkins
Way focuses on identifying and repositioning out-of-favor urban assets. The
property paused traditional hotel operations during COVID and most recently
served as temporary housing. The firm plans to reposition the asset through
renovations, including cosmetic upgrades to all guestrooms and corridors.
Designed to accommodate approximately 650 beds, the reimagined property will
also feature the conversion of former hotel amenity areas into functional
shared spaces, including a communal kitchen and dining area, laundry rooms,
lounges, study spaces, and a fitness center. The property will be managed by
Los Angeles-based FCL Management, which operates housing and hospitality assets
in the U.S.

Bennett
acquires in Charleston.
Charleston, South Carolina-based Bennett Hospitality has acquired the
55-key The Inn at Middleton Place in Charleston from an undisclosed seller for
an undisclosed amount. Bennett is partnering with Middleburg, Virginia-based
Salamander Collection to operate and manage the property. The hotel originally
opened in 1987.

Dreamscape
adds in Utah.
Dallas-based
Dreamscape Hospitality has added the Cougar Ridge Resort in Torrey, Utah to its
management portfolio. The property will undergo renovations soon that will add
a restaurant and other amenities. 

Hilton
adds in London.
Hilton has signed a franchise agreement with real estate developer and operator
Dominus to partner on the 237-key The Derby London City, Curio Collection by
Hilton. Expected to open in early 2026, the hotel is set to be the 10th
property to open under the Curio Collection by Hilton brand in the U.K. Dominus
will manage the hotel under its Dominus Hospitality platform.

IHG adds
in Japan.
IHG Hotels
& Resorts has signed an agreement with a pair of Tokyo-based companies,
Taisei Yuraku Real Estate Co. Ltd. and Pacifica Hotels, to open a 103-key hotel
under IHG’s conversion brand, Garner, in Kyoto. The Garner Hotel Kyoto Shijo
Karasuma will be the fourth Garner hotel in Japan and is scheduled to open in
November after closing for a full renovation. IHG has 54 hotels across 10
brands in Japan, with 17 hotels in the pipeline.
