Live updates: Israel-Iran attacks, missile strikes on Tel Aviv, Haifa, rising death tolls

Donald Trump’s counterparts at the G7 plan to press the US president Monday on his strategy for dealing with Israel and Iran, officials from multiple delegations say, as the spiraling conflict shadows the first day of the summit

Organizers of the conference of leading industrialized nations hoped to release a joint statement calling for de-escalation, and discussions were underway among the nations on language as the summit was getting started in the Canadian Rockies, the officials said.

But there are some differences between the countries on how far to go in supporting Israel’s attacks on Iran.

Trump has remained supportive of Israel but is wary of any US offensive involvement. As he departed Washington for Alberta, he voiced confidence a deal could still be struck between the two countries to end the wave of missile attacks, and has said he believes nuclear negotiations with Iran will proceed.

But it’s far from clear to European officials what makes Trump confident that talks can continue, given the scale and scope of Israel’s attacks.

Given US influence over Israel, Trump’s fellow leaders want a clearer picture of how long the US intends to allow the conflict to continue, or whether Trump plans to apply pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to de-escalate, the officials said.

Already, a difference has emerged between Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron over a role for Russian President Vladimir Putin to play in mediating the conflict.

After a phone call with Putin this weekend, Trump said Sunday he believed the Russian leader could act as a mediator. But Macron dismissed the idea during a visit to Greenland, saying Moscow’s own violation of the UN Charter in Ukraine disqualified it from acting as a peace broker.

Instead, Macron said the US has the best capacity to “bring everyone back to the table,” given Israeli dependence on American weapons.
