Mikel Arteta just described Arsenal’s full-back areas as “very competitive” in his pre-match interview with Sky Sports.
Heading into this weekend, I reckon most people could have had different full-back pairings and would still have been justified.
Benjamin White could be just as important as Riccardo Calafiori if Arteta wants his side to be imposing and attack Manchester United from the off.
On starting fast, Viktor Gyokeres has also done something positive within the opening minute in both of his starts for Arsenal in pre-season.
Against Villarreal, it was running in behind to cut the ball back into the penalty area. Against Athletic Club, it was winning a foul when trying to run in behind and getting the opposition defender booked.
Arsenal made a habit of fast starts in the 2022-23 season, but have had to wait longer to break games open in the last two seasons.
Arteta will hope Gyokeres helps in that regard too, as well as with goals.
