Nearby basement flooded, society residents fear water contamination

Ghaziabad: The waterlogged basement of an under-construction project has become a health concern for residents of Uninav Heights, a society in Raj Nagar Extension. The society, home to about 4,000 people, claimed that the waterlogged basement of the adjacent and stalled Red Apple complex had contaminated the underground water tank. Although the rainwater had receded by Sunday, the contamination of the underground water tank remained a significant concern. The society shares a common boundary wall with the under-construction Red Apple complex, which is now under NCLT. The main concerns of the residents of the UH complex are that the source of their water supply through the underground water tanks of the UH complex, which is adjacent to the boundary wall common to both societies, is contaminated due to the rainwater flooding in the level 2 basement of the Red Applex complex. According to Fanish Kumar Rai, president of the Uninav Heights Apartment Owners Association (UH-AOA), Rajnagar Extension, the problem persisted for the last 3-4 years. Still, earlier issues were due to the accumulation of rainwater. However, since the 2024 monsoon, this problem has been aggravated due to broken and choked drains in front of the same society, which causes the flow and accumulation of dirty drain waters of other nearby societies.“And since our water supply is through the underground water tanks which are underneath the common wall of both Red Apple and UH, the dirty drain water from the adjoining complex has contaminated the water tank and thereby the supply to our society, leading to several people falling ill,” Rai told TOI, adding that about 60-70 families are affected, having sick people, mainly children and the elderly.Neha Nidhi, a resident of Uninav Heights, stated that along with her husband, her two young children have been suffering from acute gastrointestinal distress for the past several days. “They complained of symptoms of intense abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, high-grade fever, and profuse diarrhoea, which escalated to such a degree that hospitalisation for the children was nearly required. “We’ve all been severely ill. I suspect the source of the infection to be contaminated drinking water,” said Nidhi.Similarly, Kumar Mamesh, another resident of UH, expressed deep concern regarding the deteriorating quality of the water supply in the society, blaming it on the waterlogging and consequent dirty drain water contaminating the UH underground water tanks. A response from concerned officials is awaited on the matter.
