new covid variant concerns: The alarming new COVID threat terrifying doctors across the globe today

Featured5 days ago6 Views

There has been a rise in the COVID-19 cases again in many parts of the country. Vaccine rules have changed this year. Last year everyone from 6 months and older could get the shot, but now only people 65+ or those younger with certain health issues (like asthma, smoking, or lung problems) are allowed. The rules also vary from state to state, creating massive confusion.

Dr. Oni Blackstock, a primary care physician and executive director of Health Justice, called the new eligibility rules “a horrible mess,” saying it feels like a “chaotic, constantly shifting scavenger hunt” depending on where you live, as reported by HuffPost.

Some states, like New York, allow anyone to get the shot regardless of rules, but others like Georgia and Louisiana require a doctor’s prescription. Some pharmacies are not even offering the vaccine right now. Blackstock warned that this patchwork system makes it harder for the public to access a safe vaccine. Blackstock added that these restrictions are especially dangerous because cases are already rising heading into the fall surge.

COVID risk for children

Children under 2 are at high risk. Dr. Anita Patel, a pediatric critical care doctor in Washington, D.C., said she is worried about kids aged 2, since they have a tendency of getting sick and can end up in ICUs needing oxygen or even ventilators.
Patel explained that the rate of taking COVID vaccine among children is very low, and the new restrictions make it worse. For example, children who have underlying conditions and are in the age group of 6 months and older can only get Moderna, not Pfizer or Novavax. Healthy kids without conditions are not eligible at all.

Vaccines protect from severe disease, says Patel. Research shows taking vaccines lessens the risk of long COVID. Long COVID shows symptoms such as fatigue, coughing, chest pain which can last for weeks or even years. If doctors and pharmacies are unclear, then regular people will be even more confused, leading many to skip shots. That could result in more long COVID and serious complications, including strokes and clotting issues in vulnerable groups, as per HuffPost report.

Overcrowded hospitals COVID

Vaccine access is unequal. Dr. Eric Burnett, an internal medicine doctor in New York, said requiring prescriptions in some states creates health disparities. Many people don’t have primary care doctors or insurance, so they can’t easily get the vaccine. Burnett explained this divide could make outcomes worse for underinsured and uninsured communities, who already face big health gaps, as per reports.

Hospitals are already overcrowded. Burnett noted that even in August which is usually a slow time even then the hospitals were overflowing with patients. With cold and flu season coming, plus unclear vaccine access, the situation could spiral. He said ER visits are already climbing, and COVID cases are adding to the pressure. Many people also developed chronic illnesses during the pandemic due to delayed care, making hospitals busier now.

Burnett reminded that even people not at risk of COVID may face longer waits for emergencies like broken bones or cuts because hospitals are so full. He warned that this ongoing strain on the healthcare system will hurt public health overall and remains a serious concern as we move forward, according to the report by HuffPost.
