Police officer assists with evacuation after fire breaks out at New Westminster apartment building

Featured1 week ago5 Views

A New Westminster Police Department officer was at the right place at the right time to help residents escape after a fire broke out on the top floor of an apartment building Saturday afternoon.

Sgt. Andrew Leaver says one of the department’s staff sergeants saw the flames as she was driving in the area of the apartment building, located on Columbia Street near Begbie.

“She rushed to the building and assisted an elderly resident down the stairs to safety,” Leaver said.

“In addition to assisting with evacuating the building, our officers provided traffic control while New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services did their work.”

BC Emergency Health Services was called to the scene around 3 p.m. A spokesperson tells us that nobody was treated at the scene or taken to the hospital.

Photos shared with 1130 NewsRadio show flames coming out of what appears to be the penthouse.
