Karen Read’s murder trial entered its seventh week with jurors hearing from three new defense witnesses to start the day on Monday morning.
Jonathan Diamandis, a childhood friend of former Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor, was called to testify about a series of inappropriate text messages Proctor sent about Read while serving as lead investigator in the case.
His testimony was brief, and he was followed on the witness stand by former Canton Police Officer Kelly Dever.
Emergency physician and forensic pathologist Dr. Marie Russell spent the rest of the day on the stand. The day finished while she was still being cross-examined, and she was due back Tuesday.
The prosecution rested its case last week, and the defense called its first witness Friday.
Read is accused of hitting John O’Keefe, her Boston police officer boyfriend, with her SUV in 2022 and leaving him to die alone in the snow outside of a house party at 34 Fairview Road in Canton, Massachusetts. Her defense team has said she was a victim of a vast police conspiracy and that O’Keefe was fatally beaten by another law enforcement officer at the party.
A mistrial was declared last year after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
