Democratic Sen. Cory Booker ended his record-setting speech the identical approach he started it, greater than 25 hours earlier: by invoking the phrases of his mentor, the late congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis.

“He endured beatings savagely on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, at lunch counters, on freedom rides. He stated he needed to do one thing. He wouldn’t normalize a second like this,” Booker stated of Lewis’ work as a younger activist in the course of the Civil Rights motion. “He wouldn’t simply associate with enterprise as common.”
