The one topic Trump and Starmer will ‘have trouble avoiding’ in news conference later

The UK media will likely be asking Donald Trump tougher questions than he’s used to back at home, a former Middle East adviser to the US Department of Defence has said.

Speaking to our lead politics presenter Sophy Ridge, Jasmine El-Gamal explained that there is an “atmosphere of intimidation and fear” in the US among the press, with threats of passes being revoked or access being restricted.

“I don’t know if they [US media] will be asking as tough questions as the UK, but certainly there will be tough questions,” she said.

El-Gamal pointed out that one topic the leaders will likely be asked about is the situation in Gaza, and their differing opinions on recognising the state of Palestine.

“The US State Department denied visas to the Palestinian delegation, so they aren’t even able to attend the UN General Assembly this week in New York,” she said.

“The other real issue here is something I see both leaders having in common… there’s a wave of anger and frustration and helplessness at how this has been allowed to happen and how we are seeing these awful images of displacement and bombing and erasure.

“Two of the most powerful leaders in the world are not able or not willing to do anything about it, so I think they’re going to have trouble avoiding talking about that.”
