President Donald Trump’s approval rating dropped to 38% in a new Pew Research Center survey as some of his supporters sour on his performance and key initiatives prove unpopular.

Trump’s approval rating is down three points since June and nine points since shortly after his inauguration, when it stood at 47%. Meanwhile, 60% of U.S. adults now disapprove of Trump’s performance, the survey found.

Contributing to Trump’s declining support: Among those who voted for him in 2024, only 85% say they approve of his performance, down from 88% in June and 95% shortly after this election, according to Pew. Trump’s support also has dipped among nonvoters.

Trump’s declining job approval comes as voters have concerns about key elements of his agenda.

The Pew survey found that 61% of Americans dissapprove of Trump’s tariffs. The president has implemented an aggressive program to impose levies on goods flowing into the U.S. from trading partners across the globe.

A plurality of Americans also oppose Trump’s signature law that reduced taxes and made steep cuts to programs such as Medicaid. The Pew survey found that 46% of Americans dissapprove of the law, while 32% approve and 23% say they’re unsure.

Trump’s handling of information related to Jeffrey Epstein is generating significant bipartisan concern, according to the poll, with 70% of Americans disapproving, including 53% of Republicans and those who lean Republican.

Epstein, a wealthy financier with connections to Trump and other prominent individuals, died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The Trump administration has been under pressure to release more documents from his case.

A majority of Americans also believe Trump is hurting how the federal government functions, instead of making it better, Pew found.

While 68% of Americans say Trump stands up for what he believes in, just 36% say he’s honest and only 29% view him as a good role model, according to the Aug. 4-10 survey of 3,554 adults.
