Russia scales down Navy Day celebrations amid Ukrainian drone attacks

Russia was forced to scale down the festivities honouring its navy as continuing Ukrainian drone attacks posed a challenge.

Russian authorities cancelled the parades of warships in St Petersburg, in the Kaliningrad region on the Baltic and in the far-eastern port of Vladivostok that are usually held to mark the annual Navy Day celebrations.

Asked about the reason for the cancellation of the parade in St Petersburg even as president Vladimir Putin arrived in his home city to visit the navy headquarters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “it’s linked to the overall situation, security reasons, which are above all else”.

Passengers vent fury over Aeroflot IT failure

Russian national flag carrier Aeroflot AFLT.MMwas forced to cancel dozens of flights on Monday, disrupting travel across the world’s biggest country, as two pro-Ukraine hacking groups claimed to have inflicted a crippling cyberattack.

Passengers vented their anger on social network VK, complaining about a lack of clear information from the airline.

Malena Ashi wrote: “I’ve been sitting at Volgograd airport since 3:30!!!!! The flight has been rescheduled for the third time!!!!!! This time it was rescheduled for approximately 14:50, and it was supposed to depart at 5:00!!!”

Another woman, Yulia Pakhota, posted: “The call centre is unavailable, the website is unavailable, the app is unavailable.

“How can I return a ticket or exchange it for the next flight, as Aeroflot suggests?”

Aeroflot said affected passengers could get a refund or rebook as soon as its systems were back and it was trying to get some passengers seats on other airlines.

Former Aeroflot pilot says IT failure a ‘disaster’

Russian companies and government websites have been subjected to sporadic hacking attacks, but Monday’s was potentially the most damaging, because of the widespread disruption and the high profile of Aeroflot.

Former Aeroflot pilot and aviation expert Andrei Litvinov said: “This is a serious disaster. Okay, flight delays – you can survive that. But these are losses, huge losses for a state-owned company.”

He added: “If all the correspondence, all the corporate data is exposed – this can have very long-term consequences … First the drones, and now they are blowing up this situation from the inside.”

Former POWs in Russia channel their pain into rebuilding lives in Ukraine

Since his release from a Russian prison in April, Stanislav Tarnavskyi has been in a hurry to build the life in Ukraine he dreamed about during three years of captivity.

The 25-year-old has proposed to his girlfriend, bought an apartment and adopted a golden retriever. And that was just what he accomplished one week in July.

But as busy as he is rekindling old relationships and creating new ones, Tarnavskyi cannot shake the trauma he and thousands of other Ukrainian soldiers experienced as prisoners of war. The U.N. says many endured beatings, starvation and humiliation at the hands of their captors — experiences that will leave lifelong scars.

Russia’s Medvedev calls EU-US deal ‘anti-Russian’ over potential fallout for Russian oil and gas

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that a framework trade agreement struck between the European Union and the United States was “anti-Russian” likening it to a de facto ban on buying Russian oil and gas.

The US struck the deal with the EU on Sunday, imposing a 15 percent import tariff on most EU goods.

“Of course, the ‘deal’ is clearly anti-Russian in nature, prohibiting the purchase of our oil and gas,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram.

He predicted the fallout for Europe and its citizens would be damaging as they would have to pay more for their energy.

“One can only feel sorry for ordinary Europeans,” Medvedev said.

Trump: I am not interested in talking to Putin anymore

Donald Trump has said he is “not interested” in talking with Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine anymore.

Speaking alongside Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, the US President described the conflict as a “really bloody war” and said striking a deal would be “common sense”.

“I think that eventually something’s going to happen,” he adds.

“It should happen fast, so many people are dying.”

Trump says he is setting new 10 to 12-day deadline for Russia on war

Donald Trump has increased pressure on Russia to end its war in Ukraine, saying he was setting a new deadline of 10 to 12 days for Moscow to make progress on doing so.

Trump, who is holding meetings in Scotland, said earlier on Monday that he was going to shorten a 50-day deadline he had set because of frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
