  • Recent polls show Americans generally disapprove of President Trump, though on some issues they support his policies.
  • Presidential approval ratings date back to the 1930s, seeking to convey public opinion on the president.

Five months into his second term, President Donald Trump faces poor approval ratings from the American public in most polls, though some polls show support for his policies.

Nationwide, recent polls found a slight dip in Trump’s approval ratings, with more than half the country disapproving of Trump and his job performance. Some poll results showed more than 50% approval for his immigration policy, though the CBS News/YouGov survey was taken prior to nationwide anti-ICE protests.

Trump currently faces renewed backlash amid widespread ICE raids and deportations, a controversial travel ban, tariff threats on American companies and a very public feud with his onetime buddy and former Department of Government Efficiency leader, billionaire Elon Musk.

A Quinnipiac University poll released June 11 shows 54% of American disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 38% approve.

Trump and his policies saw greater support among Republican voters, poll results showed.

Meanwhile, congressional Democrats face record-low approval ratings, including over half of Democratic voters disapproving.

The Quinnipiac survey was conducted by live phone interviews via landline and cell phone with random digit dialing from probability-based samples, Quinnipiac University said.

How is a president’s approval rating determined?

According to data agency Gallup, a presidential approval rating is a “simple measure, yet a very powerful one that has played a key role in politics for over 70 years.”

A president’s approval rating reflects the percentage of Americans polled who approve of the president’s performance. Anything can impact a president’s rating, such as legislation passed, actions and elections.

According to ABC News, an approval rating doesn’t just represent how well the administration is doing for the general public, but could determine the outcome of an upcoming election for a politician or how much they get done during their time in office.

What are the origins of presidential approval ratings?

Presidential approval ratings were first conducted by the founder of the American Institute of Public Opinion, George Gallup, around 1935 to gauge public support for the president of the United States during his term.

While Gallup has tracked presidential approval for decades, other organization release their own polls as well, including Ipsos and Morning Consult.

Project FiveThirtyEight also finds averages of these polls, highlighting the specific issues citizens are most concerned about. For example, Project FiveThirtyEight found Trump’s most polled-on issue area was immigration.
